The Amazing Algarve Coast Self-Guided

Hybrid Bike | Self-Guided | Landscape
 x

This is a landscape bicycle tour in Portugal that takes place along the south coast of Portugal. You will start in Sagres, which is the place from where our brave forefathers sailed on their caravels seeking new peoples and continents. Cape S. Vicente is the start point, the south-westernmost point in Continental Europe – the place where the land ends and the sea begins. And you will always ride eastwards towards the Spanish border.

The overall difficulty level of this tour is 2, Moderate (more precisely, level 2.4 between 1~5). It is recommended for enthusiast bikers.

On this bike tour in Portugal you will visit some of the beaches of our famous Algarve including the cosmopolitan city of Lagos. This is one of the oldest towns in the Algarve. We can still see evidence of the wall surrounding the town for protection. Lagos also has an old fort and its former Slave Market is now an art gallery. You will ride along the world-famous Algarve coast where you can see some amazing Golf resorts and very beautiful beaches.

You will visit Albufeira and Vilamoura, very fancy touristic places, the old quarters in Faro (the city capital of the Algarve), the typical city of Tavira with Moorish influence with its countless buildings and monuments and the amazing Roman bridge over the Gilão river in the historic center. You will ride along the Natural Park of Ria Formosa, a lagoon system that extends itself over 60km of the coast and which is a passing area for the migrating fauna of Europe to North of Africa and it is also the “winter resort” for many birds from North and Central Europe.

This bike tour in Portugal ends in Tavira, a town that still manages to maintain its traditions.

You will notice the differences along the Algarve region: the center is very developed for tourism and the west and the east still maintained many evidences of the old Portuguese ways and traditions.

TESTIMONIALS

“This was our first bike trip and since non of us are “real” cyclists, this was the perfect trip for us. Our purpose was to spend some quality time with our daughter and son-in-law who are currently living in Europe and to see Portugal for the first time. My daughter and I booked the electric bike option (very glad we did!). I can’t say enough about how well the trip was planned, how organized Jose and Cristina are, the quality of the food and hotels. And the scenery …amazing! Jose and Cristina, in addition to running an excellent company, are very personable hosts who make every effort to make your trip what you want it to be. We booked this trip after trolling the web and looking at many companies. One of our deciding factors to book with Portugal Bike were the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor. And to our delight, we found they were all accurate. Thank you, Jose and Cristina! And I am already planning our next trip with you!”

“We went the last week in April, the weather was perfect and the wildflowers were in full bloom and insanely beautiful. We’d never seen anything like it, miles and miles of flowers. I’m pretty sure The Garden of Eden must have looked like this. The coastline, the towns and cities were also stunning, in fact the whole trip was pretty much perfect.
The food on the tour ranges from very good to fair, but never bad; it is after all, an all-inclusive tour. We are foodies and if I did it again, I might sneak out a couple nights to eat in some of the clearly great seafood restaurants we passed along the way.
The operators, José & Cristina Henriques are the perfect blend of fun without forgetting that this is their business. They do a great job of keeping everything moving along safely and without any surprises. José is compulsive obsessive about the condition of his bicycles, they looked like they just came out of the showroom.
One note, there are a few mega hills to climb and sometimes there’s a 15 knot headwind to go with the hill. Unless you’re Lance Armstrong, do yourself a favor, swallow your pride and rent an eBike, they are amazing. It’s just a bike until you ask it for some help to zip you past the others climbing a hill. By the end of the day everyone was jealous of my eBike.”

“We did the Algarve hybrid tour. The trip was fantastic, and both Jose and Ricardo did fabulous jobs. Ricardo rode with us and was always smiling and accommodating and patient, and he even fixed a flat tire I got (from a tiny nail) in less than 10 minutes. The bikes were in excellent condition, of the highest quality, with trip computers, mirrors, and super-comfortable seats. Jose, who drove the van, was the perfect host. He was always smiling and telling jokes, and he was eager to answer all our questions. He gave us terrific regional snacks (like figs with almonds) and fresh fruit. Things couldn’t have been easier. Jose arranged dinner for us. It would have been easy for him to cut corners and save money on mediocre meals. But Jose picked great restaurants, with excellent food choices. Dinner included great (usually “reserve”) bottles of regional wines chosen by Jose. Desserts and a glass of port were provided as well. As you can tell, we would highly recommend Portugal Bike!!”

“Our trip with Portugal Bike was our first bike tour. Would we do it again with Portugal Bike? The answer is a huge YES! All aspects of our bike tour were handled superbly. Great bikes, excellent and fun meals at local restaurants, interesting and creative bike routes, and fine lodgings. And most importantly, thoughtful hosts and guides. For a fun active vacation, we highly recommend Portugal Bike Tours!”
