Cork Trees & The Algarve Wild Coast Guided

This tour is the combination of two mountain bike tours: Cork Trees & Coast + The Algarve Wild Coast, allowing you to ride along the south-west coast of Portugal, starting south of Lisbon.

The overall difficulty level of this tour is 3, Intermediate (more precisely, level 3.3 between 1~5). It is recommended for “bikers” and “cyclists”. It is supposed that you are in good shape.

Starting your mountain bike tour in Sesimbra, you will enter one of the lushest areas south of Lisbon – the Natural Park of Arrabida. On one side of the park, you’ll admire the beautiful Mediterranean landscape and at the other side, the gorgeous coast with accessible beaches where the fine sand and clear sea waters provide a strong contrast of unusual colors.

After crossing the Sado river by boat you will cycle along a cork-tree forest and this is your first contact with these amazing trees that produce cork; Portugal is the major exporter in the world of this ecological and natural product. This forest offers us winding trails with dense vegetation that look like tunnels formed by these extremely beautiful trees. You will feel alone within Nature in a Mediterranean environment with your bike.

You will go on to SW Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, which extends itself along the Portuguese coast and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. This SW landscape is 300 million years old and it is one of the most preserved landscapes all over Europe; human intervention has been less visible throughout its history. Once submerged (about 2 million years ago), this is a vast area with many different coastal habitats and countless beaches and cliffs.

Countless rocks and isolated islets complete this beautiful and unique scenery. You will feel alone within Nature in a Mediterranean environment. The west coast boasts a diversity of rare botanical species, with very interesting flora and a variety of maritime birds that nest here. Cape S. Vicente is a passing area for thousands of birds of prey.

This mountain bike tour in Portugal also goes to Sagres, which is the south-westernmost point in continental Europe, the place from where our brave forefathers sailed on their caravels seeking new peoples and continents.

Finally, this mountain bike in Portugal tour allows you to visit some of the beaches of our famous Algarve, including the cosmopolitan city of Lagos. This is one of the oldest towns in Algarve. We can still see evidence of the wall surrounding the town for protection. Lagos also has an old fort and its former Slave Market is now an art gallery.

TESTIMONIALS

“My husband and I recently completed the Cork Trees and The Algarve Wild Coast mountain bike tour. Jose and Cristina are the team that designs this fantastic bike tour from Sesimbra to Lagos. The tour highlights consist of: riding through National Parks, single track along the Mediterranean coast, cycling through dense and long Cork Oak Forests and visiting the beautiful beaches of the Algarve Coast. The scenery is spectacular! From beginning to end, attention to detail is what makes a Portugal Bike Tour so wonderful. Jose and Cristina are true professionals in every sense of the word and ensure that your trip will be memorable. The bikes are in excellent condition, the route well thought out with stops for points of interest and delicious picnics to refuel.  The choice of overnight accommodations is very good and you will enjoy the incredible variety of fish in the evening. Together, with Jose as your guide explaining the cultural and historic points of interest, and Cristina providing logistical support, you will not be disappointed.”

“Very well organized with fantastic logistical support. Bikes well suited for the job. Great scenery along the coast. Nice hotels and great food. Some tough trails not for beginners. Very happy with the experience. Mountain biking at its best!”

Alain Robitaille, 60 – Montreal, Canada

“If you are a North American cyclist looking for an international adventure, please consider a cycling trip in Portugal with Portugal bike.com. My wife and I have made 8 trips with this great company!
Portugal has everything you need for a great cycling adventure that includes history, food and relaxation. The climate is warm and sunny, the roads and trail are safe, the food is great and the people are wonderful.
You can ride on coastal cliffs, through quiet granitic villages in the north, or see the whitewashed cottages in the Alentejo. A variety of tours – road bike (asphalt), hybrid (asphalt and dirt roads), and mountain bike (dirt roads and trails) are offered.
See the unique natural landscapes – the cliffs on the coast and the Arrabida forest of stone pine with umbrella canopies shaped by the maritime winds. See the cork forests and learn how it is cultivated in this unique environment. While riding in the south, the air is pungent with the sweet smells of rock-rose, rosemary and sage.
A breadth of history abounds! See ancient megalithic monuments, roman ruins, Moorish castles, 18th century villages and sleep in palaces and monasteries that have been converted to modern luxury hotel “pousadas.” See the historical influences of Paganism, Islam and Christianity in the architecture. Visit the homes and ports of the world’s earliest navigators and explorers.
Enjoy an abundance of freshly prepared and grilled seafood or juicy black pork or native beef. Or enjoy a delicately flavored “Cataplana de peixe” (fish stew,) with fresh tamboril (monkfish), garoupa (grouper) and camarão (shrimp).
Jose and Cristina will meet you at the airport and take you to the first hotel at the start of the trip and be with you for the duration, returning you to the airport with plenty of time to make your flight.
They are the ambassadors of the country and the sport they love, in their company – PortugalBike. They know the less travelled and scenic routes to ride, the places to stay and the great restaurants. They have all the details worked out – great bikes, transit, and exposure to a new country!
Take some additional time to discover the economy of Portugal. Portugal was the winner of 24 awards in the 2016 World Travel Awards including top beach destination. Portugal is also a leader in software, machinery, moulds, textiles, ceramics, wind and solar energy and shoes.
As a cyclist in 8 Portugal Bike trips, you can’t go wrong with this adventure!”
