Cork Trees & Coast Guided

Starting your mountain bike tour in Sesimbra, you will enter one of the lushest areas south of Lisbon – the Natural Park of Arrabida. On one side of the park, you’ll admire the beautiful Mediterranean landscape and at the other side, the gorgeous coast with accessible beaches where the fine sand and clear sea waters provide a strong contrast of unusual colors.

The overall difficulty level of this tour is 3, Intermediate (more precisely, level 3.3 between 1~5). It is recommended for “bikers” and “cyclists”. It is supposed that you are in good shape.

After crossing the Sado river by boat you will cycle along a cork-tree forest and this is your first contact with these amazing trees that produce cork; Portugal is the major exporter in the world of this ecological and natural product. This forest offers us winding trails with dense vegetation that look like tunnels formed by these extremely beautiful trees. You will feel alone within Nature in a Mediterranean environment with your bike.

You will go on to SW Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, which extends itself along the Portuguese coast and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. This SW landscape is 300 million years old and it is one of the most preserved landscapes all over Europe; human intervention has been less visible throughout its history. Once submerged (about 2 million years ago), this is a vast area with many different coastal habitats and countless beaches and cliffs.

Your daily bike rides include going to the wonderful beaches of this Natural Park, where you can refresh yourself in the clear water of the sea. Cliffs are steep, almost 100m high and right above the ocean. Countless rocks and isolated islets complete this beautiful and unique scenery.

The west coast boasts a diversity of rare botanical species, with very interesting flora and a variety of maritime birds that nest here.

TESTIMONIALS

“This was our 2nd bike adventure in Portugal, with Jose and Christina, of Portugal Bike. This time we chose the mountain bike option. We were thrilled with the physical challenges we encountered, and drank in the natural beauty that Portugal offers. We explored Alentejo region from sea to coast, venturing through the Cork forest and stork nesting areas. The food, wine, accommodations, and company was unbeatable and first rate. We highly recommend cycling with Portugal Bike Tours, you will not be disappointed. We are already thinking of our next cycling adventure with Jose and Christina.”

Jeff & Carroll McRae, 56 && 55 – Northwood, United Kingdom

“My two friends and I self-guided a bike tour of the west and southwest coast of Portugal (and cork forests) for 7 days [Cork Trees & Coast + The Algarve Wild Coast]. Portugal Bike provided us with premium mountain bikes and a reliable GPS system. We stayed in nice locations and hotels. The staff was pleasant and helpful all the way through our tour. No problems to report only pleasant experiences. Portugal is a hidden gem that more Americans should experience.”

James Brosnan, 52 – Durham NC, United States

“My husband and I recently completed the Cork Trees and The Algarve Wild Coast mountain bike tour. Jose and Cristina are the team that designs this fantastic bike tour from Sesimbra to Lagos. The tour highlights consist of: riding through National Parks, single track along the Mediterranean coast, cycling through dense and long Cork Oak Forests and visiting the beautiful beaches of the Algarve Coast. The scenery is spectacular! From beginning to end, attention to detail is what makes a Portugal Bike Tour so wonderful. Jose and Cristina are true professionals in every sense of the word and ensure that your trip will be memorable. The bikes are in excellent condition, the route well thought out with stops for points of interest and delicious picnics to refuel.  The choice of overnight accommodations is very good and you will enjoy the incredible variety of fish in the evening. Together, with Jose as your guide explaining the cultural and historic points of interest, and Cristina providing logistical support, you will not be disappointed.”
