Porto Towards Lisbon Self-Guided

Gravel Bike | Self-Guided | Landscape

This tour connects the 2 largest cities in Portugal: Porto in the North and Lisbon in the South.

We start in Porto and ride southwards towards Lisbon along the beautiful and diverse Portuguese Atlantic coast.

This tour takes you to “Senhor da Pedra” beach that was voted as the 10th most beautiful beach in Europe, according to “Best European Destinations” Organization. The online contest jury was composed by 10 thousand tourists to vote on a list of 280 beaches!

You also see the tallest lighthouse in Portugal that is 62meter tall and it is working since 1893; its light ranges 23 nautical miles!

You cross one of the largest areas of forest in Portugal, Leiria Pine Forest; the plantation of this forest started in the 13th century and its purpose was the protection of the the coast from maritime erosion. This section consists of bike lanes; this is one of the longest bike lanes in Portugal. Finally you will get the the vast and cosmopolitan beach  in Figueira da Foz.

You continue riding southwards and you get to the famous fisherman village of Nazaré, the place known worldwide for its Giant Waves. Many surfers from all over the world come here hoping to surf these giant waves, sometimes over 33m (100ft) high. This waves are formed by the famous Nazare Canyon, a geological formation that is around 1600m deep; these giant waves occur mainly in the Winter time.

Another highlight of this bicycle tour in Portugal is Óbidos, the most-well preserved medieval town in Portugal. Originally a Roman village, it was taken from the Moors in 1148. Its castle is classified as a national monument and it is a perfect example of a medieval fortress. This is a “village-museum”, perfectly preserved and walled by its high walls which perpetuate its medieval character.

You ride to Peniche, another place of fishing traditions. You will ride towards Cape Carvoeiro admiring a beautiful scenery along the sea. Here the wind and the sea work together making the most interesting shapes of the rocks.
