Hybrid Bike | Guided | Historic

Alentejo is the perfect set for riding a bicycle in Portugal and experiencing an unforgettable adventure.

One of the most typical sights in this region is a vast field with some cork oak trees here and there (the so-called Montado) and the herds (sometimes sheep, sometimes pigs or cows) usually enjoying the shade of the trees. The villages with their whitewashed one-floor houses are a picturesque landscape in Alentejo.

The people here in Alentejo region are very proud of their heritage and they preserve the ancient buildings and also the ancient practices. This is a region that has a very rich handicraft tradition – pottery, embroideries, hand-painted furniture, wrought-iron works, etc. The local gastronomy is varied and quite tasty and perfectly matches the famous local wines.

This bicycle tour in Portugal starts in Elvas, an old border town which is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.

The overall difficulty level of this tour is 2, Moderate (more precisely, level 1.8 between 1~5). It is recommended for enthusiast bikers.

Biking in this region of Portugal you visit the capital of marble, and you can see marble everywhere, even the sidewalks are made of marble.

The bicycle tour continues along quarries, vineyards and cork trees. The roads are quiet, the landscape is amazing! You cycle surrounded by natural beauty and you feel alone within this peaceful environment!

This bike tour in Portugal ends in a Convent which was converted into a Charm Hotel and that is located within a cork tree forest. This is the perfect place to end our cycling adventure in Portugal!

“We have taken many biking trips throughout Europe and other parts of the world, but this one tops our experiences to date. We travelled with Portugal Bike through the Alentejo region of Portugal for a week and experienced Wine, Castles, Marble and more. (…) No detail was overlooked and we were treated to countless unexpected surprises and good fun throughout the trip. Everything was first class in our opinions with superb attention to detail in the bikes (which rode like velvet, 30 gears, equipped with cyclometers, mirrors, and helmets provided), the guiding – José is a passionate cyclist who thoughtfully took us a thorough briefing about proper use and care of bikes, road etiquette, daily information about the region, cities, and imparted (as did Cristina) lots of ‘local knowledge’ explained clearly on a timely basis. Because Portugal has a long and dense history spiced with complex relationships with the Moors and the Spanish for instance, the architecture, religion, food often reflects these influences and made for some fascinating discoveries for us as travellers – especially when one travels by bike. We were delighted with Cristina and José’s selection of fascinating accommodations (castles, monasteries for example), we ate and drank authentic, beautifully prepared food and wine of the Alentejo region and appreciated the balance of interesting terrain to cycle with experiences which ranged from visits to wineries to marble quarries, groves of cork oaks and olive trees. Overall, we cannot recommend highly enough this wonderful couple and their company Portugal Bike.”

Barbara Morin, 68 – Calgary, Canada

“Our group of two couples just completed the Marble, Wine and Heritage hybrid tour. Cristina and Jose were wonderful hosts, the hotels were great, and the food so delicious, I gained a few pounds. The bike rides were varied and enjoyable, and our non-riding friend was able to join us in the included activities like wine tasting and the Marble Museum. I could not recommend a tour company more highly, and wish they guided tours throughout Europe, so I’ve could join them every year.”

Helen Smith, 69 – New Jersey, United States

“A group of friends “discovered Portugal” with Portugal Bike, on their wonderful “Marble, Wine and Heritage” adventure. And while we have cycled many parts of Europe and beyond, this bike tour was by far the best. Guides and owners, Cristina and Jose, an extremely organized, knowledgeable, and personable couple, guided us through the Alentejo region of Portugal. The hybrid bikes were in top notch condition, the day’s itinerary and highlights were reviewed each morning, literature detailing the towns, the history, technical data, sights, and accommodation was provided. We visited marble quarries, vineyards, olive and cork orchards, enjoyed the local cuisine and excellent wines, and stayed in comfortable and intriguing hotels, monasteries and castles. I highly recommend Portugal Bike and would happily cycle with them again and again.”

Gai Ward, 68 – Calgary, Canada

“My wife and I just completed the Marble, Wine & Heritage Tour and had a fantastic experience. It was everything and more that we hoped for. I rode a regular hybrid bike and she rode an E-assist bike which was perfect for her and allowed her to complete the trip, as well as pass me on the hills. I can’t say enough about our guides, Jose and Christina, who were fun to be with, incredibly generous and exposed us to the culture and language of Portugal. The hotels we stayed in were fabulous and the side trips to wineries and marble quarries made this so much more than a bike trip. I would return for another trip in an instant if we had the opportunity.”

Abraham Brietstein, 69 – Knoxville TN, United States
