Roman Occupation Self-Guided
Road Bike | Self-Guided | Historic
This unique bicycle tour takes you to the ancient times when Portugal was occupied by the Romans. We will pick you up at your hotel (Lisbon or Setubal) at 09:00 hours and drive you to the fishing town of Setubal, where you will ride to Alcácer do Sal.
Graciously laid out over the right bank of the Sado river and rising up a gentle slope, Alcácer do Sal has been settled since the earliest of times. The region of Alcacer became known as Urbs Imperatoria Salacia in honor of the nymph, and wife of Neptune, Salacia, for its importance in the Iberian salt trade. Included in the tour is a guided visit to the roman archaeological site, discovered in the 1980’s, and its wonderful museum.
On the way back you will ride along the peninsula of Troia, next to the Sado estuary, the only place left on the Portuguese coastline that is home to the Bottle nose dolphin. To truly experience this beautiful environment you’ll get treated to a light picnic meal in the park! At Troia you will take a refreshing 25 minute ferry boat ride in the Sado estuary back to Setúbal, the start point.
